OpenAI added Composer predictions to the Codex desktop app on 9 October 2026. After Codex responds, it suggests a follow-up prompt in the message box, and pressing Tab turns it into an editable draft. Nothing is sent automatically. The beta is limited to users aged 18 and over on personal ChatGPT Pro plans in supported regions. Generating predictions does not count toward Codex usage limits or consume credits.

What OpenAI announced

OpenAI listed Composer predictions in the ChatGPT and Codex changelog on 9 October 2026. The feature adds autocomplete-style suggestions for the next message in the Codex desktop app. After Codex finishes a response, it uses the current conversation to suggest a follow-up prompt in the message box. Pressing Tab accepts the suggestion as an editable draft. Typing anything else ignores it.

Accepting a prediction does not send it. The Composer predictions documentation says the text lands in the message box for review, and the user sends it when ready. Users can keep typing without waiting for a prediction to appear.

Who can use it and what it costs

The feature is in beta for users aged 18 and older on personal ChatGPT Pro plans in supported regions. That wording leaves out Plus, Go and Free, as well as Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces. According to OpenAI's Codex pricing page, Pro comes at $100, $200 or $500 per month. Predictions are on by default for eligible users and can be switched off with the Show predictions toggle under Settings, General, Composer.

OpenAI says generating predictions does not count toward Codex usage limits and does not consume credits. Once a message is sent, including an accepted prediction, normal Codex usage limits and billing apply. Predictions work in local and SSH threads. The changelog names GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol as the supported models at launch, and the current documentation adds GPT-6.1 Terra.

How predictions use context

Predictions read only the conversation in the current thread. If context from past work or connected apps is already in that thread, it can shape the suggestion, but OpenAI says predictions do not look up memories or fetch data from connected apps on their own. With memory turned on, memory context already in the thread can personalise them, and the feature also works with memory off.

For developers, the practical change is fewer keystrokes between agent turns. A common follow-up such as asking Codex to run tests or open a live preview can be one key press away, while the decision to send stays with the user. The feature sits alongside other recent ChatGPT interface changes such as Intelligent UI answers. More coding tool news is under AI Tools.

What to watch next

OpenAI has not said when Composer predictions will reach Plus, Business or Enterprise users, or which regions are excluded. It also has not published acceptance rates or quality data for the suggestions. A wider rollout would show in the changelog first.
