Open-source local inference engine

llama.cpp

llama.cpp is an open-source C and C++ inference engine for running large language models on local hardware, built on the ggml tensor library. It created the GGUF file format for quantized weights and powers local AI apps such as Ollama, LM Studio and Jan. The ggml and llama.cpp projects joined Hugging Face.

Questions people ask

What is GGUF?
A single-file format from the llama.cpp team that packages model weights, tokenizer data and an optional chat template, with quantization levels such as Q4_K_M that trade precision for memory.
Is llama.cpp still the recommended engine for local inference?
Hugging Face says llama.cpp remains its recommended engine when efficient local inference is the priority, with transformers GGUF support aimed at experimentation, evaluation and fine-tuning.
