Microsoft announced on 10 September 2026 that people can build business apps by describing them in plain language, in Copilot Studio next to agents and workflows, and in Copilot Cowork through a new /app skill. Agentic coding turns the request into a full-stack app that connects to company data through connectors and Work IQ. Apps respect Entra identity and data policies and appear in the Microsoft 365 admin center. Copilot Studio access entered public preview, with usage-based billing.

Key facts

  • Announced: 10 September 2026 (Microsoft Copilot blog, Ryan Cunningham, Corporate Vice President)
  • Copilot Studio: App (Preview) tile next to agents and workflows, rolling out in public preview over the following week
  • Copilot Cowork: /app skill available through the Microsoft Frontier program
  • Governance: Entra identity, data and connector policies; app inventory in the Microsoft 365 admin center
  • Billing: usage-based; specific prices not stated in the announcement

What Microsoft announced

Microsoft introduced natural language app building in Copilot Cowork and Copilot Studio on 10 September 2026. The post is by Ryan Cunningham, Corporate Vice President for Copilot Studio and Power Platform. A user picks App (Preview) on the Copilot Studio home screen, or calls the /app skill in a Copilot Cowork chat, and describes the business outcome, the users, the data and the actions needed. Microsoft says Copilot Studio then uses agentic coding to produce a working app scaffold.

Builders keep refining the app in natural language, check it in a preview and can read the generated code. Apps reach business data through connectors and use Work IQ for organizational context, and they can write results back to systems inside the Microsoft 365 tenant boundary. Microsoft gives two examples: an onboarding app that tracks progress and updates records, and a field service app that pulls product data from a third-party system and writes results back.

How IT keeps control

Microsoft says the generated apps are full-stack apps built on open standards. They can use Git-backed source control, deployment stages and version isolation, so a team can work on the next version without disturbing the live one. By default they respect Microsoft Entra identity and the organization's data and connector policies. Published apps appear in an inventory in the Microsoft 365 admin center, with operational controls for administrators, and users find shared apps at managedapps.cloud.microsoft.com.

The /app skill in Copilot Cowork is available through the Microsoft Frontier program. App building inside Copilot Studio was due to reach environments in public preview over the week after the announcement. Building and running apps follows Copilot Studio's usage-based billing model; the post gives no rates.

Why it matters

With apps on the same home screen as agents and workflows, Copilot Studio becomes one place to build the interface, the automation and the agent for a business process, which is the pitch in the announcement. It also shifts Microsoft's low-code offer toward prompting, while keeping the identity and policy controls large customers already use.

The governance details are the main difference from general vibe-coding tools: the apps inherit tenant identity and connector policies and show up in an admin inventory from the first publish. What the announcement does not say is how much an app costs to build or run, or how generated code is reviewed for quality and security before it reaches users.

What to watch next

Microsoft's monthly Copilot Studio roundup of 7 October 2026 again led with app building next to agents and workflows. Watch for general availability dates, published rates under usage-based billing, and whether the feature reaches customers outside the Frontier program in Copilot Cowork.
