What SAP announced

SAP used its SAP Connect event in Las Vegas to present Joule Work, Joule Assistants and SAP Business AI Platform as the working parts of what it calls the Autonomous Enterprise. The press release is dated 6 October 2026.

Joule Work is a new AI user interface that lets employees work with SAP applications in their own language and complete tasks across SAP and third-party data. SAP says it is beginning its customer rollout, and that a select group of customers already uses it. Inside SAP, Joule Work is live with 110,000 employees, and the company reports 20% productivity gains across finance, HR and procurement. Answers are grounded in SAP Knowledge Graph, which SAP says maps more than 7 million data fields.

Joule Assistants go a step further and execute operational work within business workflows, using existing data, authorizations and audit trails. SAP says customers control the level of autonomy. Through the Agent2Agent protocol, Joule can also connect with third-party AI agents.

What changed for finance, procurement and IT teams

SAP gave examples by function. In finance, controllers can automate revenue recognition, disclosures and trade compliance, and SAP says early deployments of the International Trade Assistant reduced trade classification effort by up to 50%. In supply chain, planners can resolve disruptions across planning, manufacturing and logistics. In procurement, users can compare savings opportunities against peer benchmarks.

Customers quoted in the release describe pilots rather than finished rollouts. Novartis has co-developed and launched a pilot of the Joule Sourcing Assistant. Nestle says the Accounts Receivable Assistant can prioritize collections work by risk on top of an SAP S/4HANA program across 140 countries. PwC uses SAP's Billing Assistant to find billing issues earlier.

For builders, Joule Studio covers no-code to pro-code work on skills and agents, with more than 70 AI models to choose from. SAP AI Agent Hub in SAP LeanIX keeps a central inventory of enterprise agents. SAP also entered payments with SAP Pay, powered by its company Tereina, which executes and reconciles payments inside SAP Cloud ERP, and announced supplier risk data from Moody's inside SAP Ariba.

Why it matters

The announcement moves SAP's agent strategy from a vision stage toward named products in customer hands, with permissions and audit trails inherited from the ERP. That is the main selling point for automation inside systems of record, where errors in billing or trade compliance carry a direct cost. The productivity figures, however, come from SAP's own use and from early deployments, and the release does not describe how the 20% gain was measured. Coverage of automation platforms is collected under AI Automation.

What to watch next

SAP does not give pricing or a general availability date for Joule Work in this release, and it does not say how many customers are in the rollout. The next useful data points are customer reports on Joule Assistants beyond the pilot stage and the commercial terms for SAP Pay.
