xAI releases Grok 4.7 on a larger base model at Grok 4.6's $2 per 1M input token price
xAI, now SpaceXSI, released Grok 4.7 on 21 September 2026 with a larger base model, a 500,000-token context and Grok 4.6's $2 input and $6 output prices.

Tech AI LatestxAI, which now operates as SpaceXSI after its acquisition by SpaceX, released Grok 4.7 on 21 September 2026. The model is built on a new, larger base model than Grok 4.6 and targets coding, agentic tasks and knowledge work. It keeps Grok 4.6's API price of $2 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens below 200,000 prompt tokens, with a 500,000-token context window. It launched in Cursor, Grok Build and the xAI API.
Key facts
- Announced: 21 September 2026 (xAI announcement and API release notes)
- Price: $2 per 1M input tokens, $0.50 cached input, $6 per 1M output tokens below 200,000 prompt tokens; $4, $1 and $12 above
- Context window: 500,000 tokens; text and image input, text output, no text output limit
- xAI figures: GDPval 1695 Elo against 1605 for Grok 4.6; HackerBench v0.3 lets 3.3% of risky dual-use prompts through
- Grok 4.7 Fast runs at twice the output speed and twice the price, only in Cursor and Grok Build
What xAI announced
xAI, which SpaceX acquired in February 2026 and which now presents itself as SpaceXSI, released Grok 4.7 on 21 September 2026. The announcement calls it the company's most capable model for coding and knowledge work. xAI says Grok 4.7 uses a new, larger base model than Grok 4.6 and was trained with a longer reinforcement learning run on harder tasks, weighted toward problems that take many hours. The company says the model is better at checking its own work and managing long context, and was trained to understand its Grok Bot agent harness natively.
The model is available in Cursor and Grok Build, through the xAI API as grok-4.7, and through third-party coding harnesses, model routers and cloud platforms.
What changed for API users
The API release notes list a 500,000-token context window, text and image input with text-only output, and no text output limit. Pricing is $2 per million input tokens, $0.50 per million cached input tokens and $6 per million output tokens for prompts under 200,000 tokens. Above that threshold the rates double to $4, $1 and $12. These are the same prices and context length xAI listed for Grok 4.6 on 12 August, so the upgrade costs API users nothing extra per token.
Reasoning effort can be set to low, medium, high or xhigh, with high as the default. On the Responses API, grok-4.7 always returns encrypted reasoning content, even when the request does not ask for it. The model is also served on xAI's US regional endpoint. A Grok 4.7 Fast variant runs the same model at twice the output speed for twice the token price, or 1.5 times for long-context requests, but only inside Cursor and Grok Build, not on the public API.
What xAI claims on performance and safety
The benchmark charts in xAI's announcement put Grok 4.7 at 1695 Elo on GDPval, against 1605 for Grok 4.6, 1735 for Claude Fable 5.1 and 1542 for GPT-6 Astra. On AA Briefcase it scores 1657 against 1546 for Grok 4.6. xAI also says Grok 4.7 is at the frontier of price-performance on CursorBench 4.0. These are xAI's own figures.
xAI says Grok 4.7 ships with an entirely new safeguard stack and is the strongest model it has tested on refusals and jailbreak resistance. It reports a top score of 62.4% on LatchBio's biosafety benchmark and says that on HackerBench v0.3, its own benchmark of risky cyber tasks, the model lets only 3.3% of risky dual-use prompts through. Select cybersecurity partners get invite-only access to the model's red-team capabilities for defence research.
What to watch next
xAI has not published a model card with a knowledge cutoff, and the announcement does not say when Grok 4.6 will be retired. It also does not detail the size of the new base model. Competing releases such as GPT-6 Astra are compared on the AI model release tracker and listed under AI Models.

Questions people ask
- How much does Grok 4.7 cost?
- $2 per million input tokens, $0.50 per million cached input tokens and $6 per million output tokens for prompts under 200,000 tokens, and $4, $1 and $12 above that, per xAI's release notes.
- What is the context window of Grok 4.7?
- 500,000 tokens in the xAI API, with text and image input and text-only output.
- Is xAI still a separate company?
- No. SpaceX announced on 2 February 2026 that it had acquired xAI, and xAI's website now uses the SpaceXSI name.
