Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) signed a multi-year partnership with OpenAI and G42 at ADIPEC on 2 November 2026, and says it is the first energy company to deploy OpenAI Frontier, OpenAI's platform for building and running AI agents. The first two uses are whole-field development planning and agents that weigh crude supply, demand, prices and margins. The system runs on G42's UAE infrastructure. Financial terms and a rollout timetable were not disclosed.

What ADNOC, OpenAI and G42 signed
ADNOC announced on 2 November 2026 a multi-year partnership with OpenAI and G42, signed at the ADIPEC energy conference in Abu Dhabi. In its press release, the state oil company says it becomes the first energy company to deploy OpenAI Frontier, the enterprise platform OpenAI uses to build, connect and govern AI agents inside a company's own systems. Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan witnessed the signing, according to the release and to coverage by The National and Unite.AI.
The companies name two first applications. The first is field development planning: reasoning models combine data from thousands of wells, stacked reservoir layers, hundreds of surface facilities and capital costs, so that a plan can be optimized for a whole field at once instead of reservoir by reservoir or facility by facility. ADNOC says this could cut planning work from months to hours. The second uses interconnected agents to analyze crude oil supply, demand, prices and margins, and to estimate the value of each barrel before it is produced, so the commercial effect of an operational decision is visible in advance. That valuation capability is a company claim; no results have been published.
The system runs OpenAI's GPT models on G42's UAE-based infrastructure, and the release says human experts keep oversight of consequential decisions. The agreement also covers joint development of new applications, training for ADNOC staff, and cybersecurity cooperation for energy infrastructure through OpenAI's Daybreak Blue program. Financial terms, the length of the contract and a deployment schedule were not disclosed.
How it builds on ENERGYai and earlier OpenAI work
ADNOC already uses OpenAI models. At ADIPEC in November 2024 it launched ENERGYai with AIQ, its joint venture with G42, describing it as an agentic AI system for the energy value chain built in collaboration with G42 and Microsoft and integrating OpenAI models. In March 2025 AIQ announced a $340 million contract to deploy ENERGYai across ADNOC's upstream operations. Coverage of the new deal describes Frontier as the layer that links tools such as ENERGYai and extends their scope from subsurface work to company-wide planning and capital allocation.
OpenAI introduced Frontier in February 2026 for a limited group of enterprise customers, with HP, Intuit, Oracle and Uber named as early users. It gives each agent an identity and permissions, connects agents to business systems such as data warehouses and CRMs, and supports agents built by the customer or by other vendors. Daybreak is OpenAI's controlled-access cybersecurity program; Blue is the tier for approved defenders. More agent platform news is collected on the AI agents hub.
G42, the Abu Dhabi AI group whose units include Inception42 and the AIQ joint venture with ADNOC, is also OpenAI's main partner in the UAE for compute. In May 2025 the two companies, together with Oracle, NVIDIA, Cisco and SoftBank, announced Stargate UAE, a planned 1 gigawatt AI cluster in Abu Dhabi whose first 200 megawatts were scheduled to come online in 2026. Running the ADNOC agents on G42 capacity inside the country keeps oil field and trading data under UAE jurisdiction, which the companies present as a sovereign AI arrangement.
One of four Abu Dhabi agreements
The ADNOC deal was one of four agreements between OpenAI and Abu Dhabi entities signed during a visit by OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman, according to CNBC and The National. The others are a Machine-Readable Government initiative with the Abu Dhabi Government, which turns regulations into a form that models can check permit and certificate applications against and starts as a pilot with the food safety authority ADAFSA; an agreement between Mubadala, G42's Inception42 unit and OpenAI to use AI for investment analysis and risk assessment; and a five-year agreement between Inception42 and OpenAI to bring OpenAI models to government, businesses and schools in the UAE.
The visit came as OpenAI raises new capital, with UAE investors reported to be among the backers; reports differ on the size of the round, and the companies did not link the agreements to it. For an oil producer, the move puts agent software into decisions with large capital budgets. Coverage notes that no effect on output, costs or jobs has been shown yet.
What to watch next
The open questions are the ones the release leaves out: when the field planning system goes into daily use, how much ADNOC pays, how accuracy is checked against engineers' own plans, and which decisions stay with people. Deals announced by other national oil companies in the coming months will show whether Frontier becomes a template for the sector or remains a single showcase deal.
For OpenAI, the deal is a reference customer in heavy industry, a sector where most AI deployments so far have been narrow tools for seismic interpretation, maintenance or document search rather than agents that touch capital planning. Rivals sell similar agent platforms to large enterprises, including Microsoft, Google, Salesforce and ServiceNow, so the speed with which ADNOC moves from signing to production use will be read as a test of Frontier's readiness outside software and finance companies.
