Tech AI LatestGoogle and Oracle announced on 27 October 2026 that Google's Tensor Processing Units will be offered on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, making OCI the first hyperscaler outside Google to sell TPUs. Capacity will deploy starting in calendar year 2027. The post cites eighth-generation TPUs with up to 12.6 PFLOPS of FP4 compute per chip. Regions, prices, chip counts and the exact TPU generation for OCI are not stated.
Key facts
- Announced: 27 October 2026 (Google Cloud blog)
- OCI described as the first hyperscaler outside Google to offer TPUs
- TPU capacity on OCI deploys starting in calendar year 2027
- Eighth-generation TPU: up to 12.6 PFLOPS native FP4 per chip and up to 2x performance per watt over the previous generation
- TorchTPU, a native PyTorch stack for TPUs, is open source on GitHub
- Not stated: prices, regions, chip counts, which TPU generation OCI gets
What Google and Oracle announced
Google and Oracle announced on 27 October 2026 that Google TPUs will be available on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. The post, bylined by OCI senior vice president Karan Batta and Gurmeet Goindi, calls OCI the first hyperscaler outside Google to offer TPUs. TPU capacity on OCI will deploy starting in calendar year 2027.
The companies list four reasons for the pairing. TPU systems are designed for direct liquid cooling at rack scale, which they say fits OCI's newer data centres. TPU clusters will connect to Oracle databases and storage through Oracle Acceleron networking. Fine-tuning and inference can run next to Oracle databases without cross-cloud transfers. And customers can mix TPUs and GPUs by workload stage.
What the post says about the chips
Most of the technical detail describes TPUs in general rather than the OCI deployment. Google says eighth-generation TPUs deliver up to 12.6 PFLOPS of native FP4 compute per chip, more than 100 times the 92 TFLOPS of the first TPU, and up to twice the performance per watt of the previous generation. It says large training runs sustain over 97% goodput across thousands of chips by routing around faults with optical circuit switching, without restarting jobs.
For serving, Google cites more on-chip SRAM, more HBM and a low-diameter interconnect that cuts network hops by more than 50%, giving up to 80% better performance per dollar for low-latency serving. The post does not say whether these figures apply to OCI deployments. On software, TorchTPU, a native PyTorch stack, is open source, and the post lists support for vLLM, SGLang, llm-d, Ray and Hugging Face.
Why it matters
Until now TPUs were sold only through Google Cloud. Putting them inside another hyperscaler turns Google's custom silicon into a product that competes for rack space with NVIDIA in third-party data centres. The timing is notable: on the same day NVIDIA and Oracle said Vera Rubin is generally available on OCI, so OCI customers will be able to choose between both accelerator families. Google's own GPU plans for the period are in our A5X story.
What to watch next
The announcement leaves the commercial details open. Prices, OCI regions, capacity size, launch customers, access method and the TPU generation that OCI will receive are all not stated in the announcement. Google says customers will soon be able to assign workloads to TPUs on either Google Cloud or Oracle infrastructure, but gives no date for that either. Oracle's next earnings call and any OCI service pages for TPUs are the places those numbers should appear. More custom silicon news is under AI Chips & Infrastructure.
