Alibaba's Qwen model powers some requests in Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence. What Apple announced
Apple said in a post on its China newsroom on 31 October 2026 that the first Apple Intelligence features for users in mainland China will open for testing on 4 November with the latest iOS developer beta. The public release follows with iOS 27.3 in December, though Apple gave no exact date. 9to5Mac notes that Apple has only confirmed 4 November as the start of testing in China, not necessarily the date of the first iOS 27.3 beta.
The central change is a partnership with Alibaba. In China, Alibaba's Qwen model is built into Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence. Siri can pass certain requests to Qwen for broader knowledge, and users can ask Qwen about photos and documents, including PDFs and presentations. The other features in the release run on Apple's own models. Reports on the announcement list Writing Tools, Genmoji, Clean Up in Photos, notification and Mail summaries, Priority Notifications, Visual Intelligence and Live Translation with AirPods. Siri also gains typing to Siri and better handling of stumbles and follow-up questions.
Eligibility is narrow. The features need an iPhone 15 Pro or newer, and both the device language and the Siri language must be set to English or Simplified Chinese. The Qwen features apply to people who bought an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone in China, or whose device region and Apple Account country are both set to China. Apple says support on its other platforms in China awaits the necessary approvals.
What is missing and why it took this long
The China release is the original Apple Intelligence feature set that reached US users two years earlier, not the newest one. Siri AI, the rebuilt assistant Apple showed at WWDC 2026, is not included, and neither is Image Playground. Siri AI expanded to more languages in other markets only last week, as covered in our story on Siri AI's five new languages, and Apple has not said when it will reach China.
Rules in China require generative AI services offered to the public to be filed with regulators, which is why Apple needed a local partner. Apple Intelligence was among the generative AI services that completed the required filings in July 2026, according to several reports. MacRumors reported on 14 October that the launch was planned for iOS 27.3 in December, and the newsroom post now confirms that timing and names Qwen as the partner model. MacRumors also notes that Apple has to let Chinese authorities approve ongoing updates to the AI models used.
The partnership had been visible before it was announced. In August, Apple removed a support document that said Mac users in mainland China could link Alibaba's Qwen service, and Apple customer service said at the time that the Qwen integration had not launched in mainland China, according to TechNode and MacDailyNews. The 31 October post is the first time Apple has described the arrangement in its own newsroom, with a date for testing.
What it means for users and rivals
China is one of Apple's largest markets, and iPhones sold there have shipped without Apple Intelligence since the features launched elsewhere. Chinese Android phone makers already ship assistants built on local models. The December release narrows it, though Chinese users will still get fewer features than buyers in the US, Europe or Japan, and the most visible upgrade, Siri AI, is missing.
For iPhone owners in China the practical steps are simple once iOS 27.3 ships: update, set the device and Siri language to English or Simplified Chinese, and turn on Apple Intelligence in Settings. Features that run on Apple's own models, such as Genmoji, Clean Up and notification summaries, do not depend on Qwen. Requests that need broader world knowledge, or questions about a photo or document, are the ones Siri and Visual Intelligence can hand to Alibaba's model.
For Alibaba the deal puts Qwen in front of iPhone owners through Siri and system features, alongside its own Qwen app. Apple's announcement does not describe the commercial terms, data handling between the two companies or which Qwen version is used. Developers can start testing on 4 November, and the December update will show how much of the experience depends on Qwen and how much on Apple's own models. More app news is in our AI tools section.
